Weather Events, Records, and Important Information
7/01 - June was cool and wet with the average monthly temperature 3.0 °F below the normal of 71.1 °F. The rainfall total was 7.58" which is slightly above the station normal of 6.87". We had a few rainy Junes including this year, 11.45" in 2007, and 9.32" in 2006 leading to the high average. The long term county average for June is 4.36". There were 17 days with measurable rainfall and an even more impressive 12 days with at least a quarter inch. The yearly rainfall deficit at the station was reduced to less than 0.25" by the end of the month. There were no 90 °F days recorded during the month with 4 being about normal. 6/26 - Pea sized hail fell during a strong thunderstorm around 6:30 PM. In the 2nd round of Tstorms just before 8 PM two 43 mph gusts were recorded. Total rainfaill measured 0.73" with the monthly total now at 7.25". The yearly deficit is now about 0.25" but the airport still has a deficit of 4.65" according to their records. There have been no 90 °F days recorded this month at the station. 6/21 - The Summer Solstice was today at 1:46 EDT which means it was the longest day of the year at 15 hours and 3 minutes. The sun is also the highest in the sky at 73.1°. 6/20 - Despite the 6.5" of rainfall this month and our yearly total now at 20.5" the station is still 0.9" below the normal of 21.4". The Reading Airport's total is 16.8" which is 4.6" short of the normal of 21.4". NOAA's total for Berks County is 19.2" which is 1.5" short of the normal rainfall of 20.7". The precipitation departure map can be viewed here: MARFC Rainfall Departure Map 6/11 - Rainfall for the month is already approaching 4.2" due to the 1.17" yesterday and another ~0.50" today. Yearly rainfall is now over 18.1" with more forecasted for Friday. 6/09 - Pea sized hail fell this morning during a strong thunderstorm which dropped 0.62" of rain in a very short time. The monthly rainfall is already 2.49" so the yearly deficit at the station has now become a slight surplus. There have been two 90 ° days recorded so far this year at the station. 6/08 - Meteorological Spring Report (Mar - May) : Based on the station averages the 2009 Spring was 0.3 °F warmer then normal with an average reading of 52.3 °F. Rainfall total was 10.83" with 5.12" falling in May and was ~1.25" above the average of 9.59". Snow totaling 4.4" fell in March with none in April or May and brought the season total to 19.6". Click Here to Read Old News 6/07 - May ended a normal month with temperatures averaging 0.2 °F below the normal of 62.2 °F. Rainfall totaled 5.12" which is well above the station normal of 2.79". We had a few bad years of rain which is causing the station average to be low compared to county averages. The yearly rainfall deficit was reduced to ~0.75" by the end of the month. Wind speed was 3.1 mph predominantly out of the WSW while the station normal is 3.7 mph. 5/06 - Persistent rain every day this month has accumulated just short of 3.0" removing most of the deficit at the station. According to the newspaper the Rdg Airport deficit is still in excess of 4". Our station rainfall is listed in the Reading newspaper under Cornwall Terrace and today's edition showed the April total of 3.44". 5/02 - As a result of the high heat toward the last part of the month April ended as a normal month with the monthly average temperature 0.7 °F above the station six year average. The average temperature was 53.6 °F with no snow recorded and a total of 3.44" of rain. The normal station rainfall for April is 3.86". The yearly rainfall deficit stands at 2.90". Windspeed was about normal averaging 5.7 mph predominately out of the W. 4/16 - WxSim Forecast has been added to the main weather menu as an alternate forecast option. What is WxSim? WxSim is a software package for modeling and forecasting local weather. It's an 'interactive' local atmospheric model but it can be run in automated mode. It is initialized several times a day using our local station data, airport metar data, and some data downloaded from the internet. It then models a local forecast for the next 5 days although past 72 hours it may not be as accurate but neither is the NWS. This is a "work-in-progress" but it has been found to be as accurate or better than the NWS forecast on most runs. 4/15 - The monthly rain total has reached 2.6" while the station average for April is 3.4". The year to date deficit is approximately 4" so an average or above average month for April is needed. 4/11 - Weather Display Live has been updated with some new instrument styles and additional formatting changes. A new Full Screen option was added to the button bar but doesn't work with all browsers. The old full screen page is still available at WDL Full. 3/29 - Spring storm dumps 0.67" of rain in a 20 minute period along with 5 to 10 minutes of pea to marble size hail. A few quarter size hail stones were mixed in and a tornado warning was issued for Lyons, PA. 3/02 - Meteorological Winter Report (Dec - Feb) : Based on the station averages the 2008 Winter was 1.1 °F colder (31.7 °F) then normal. Rainfall total was ~10" mainly due to the 7.8" that fell in December and is above the average of 8.5". Snow total was 15.2" which is about 2" short of the 17" station average. 03/02 - Winter storm was a little disappointing with only 4 to 5 inches of snow for our area. February ended warm and very dry with temperatures averaging 2.8 °F above normal but precipitation of 0.65" is well below the station February average of 2.6". 03/01 - Reports page updated with data now available from January 2004 forward. The bottom section on the monthly report was enhanced with more summary information. The yearly report is currently being updated with the same information. 02/12 - Windy day follows the passing of a very strong cold front with a peak wind gust of 48 mph (52 mph at Rdg. airport). The day was the 3rd windiest on record at the station with an average speed of 15.1 mph. The windiest day was Nov 13th, 2003 with an average speed of 17.9 mph and a peak wind gust of 56 mph. 02/11 - Record high temperature of 64 °F was set at the Reading airport breaking the mark of 61 °F from 1981. The station also recorded a temperature of 64 ° at 3:08 PM. 02/02 - January was cold with a monthly average temperature 5.9 °F below the station six year average. The average temperature was 26.1 °F with 9.0" of snow recorded and a total of 2.50" of rain/liquid equivalent precipitation. Average wind was normal at 5.0 mph coming predominately out of the WNW. Maximum gusts of 34 mph were recorded on both the 14th and 28th. Season snow totals now stand at 14.3" which is close to normal based on our last 5 winters. 01/19 - 2.8" of light powder snow fell today along with the 1.0" that fell yesterday brings our season total now to 10.3". 01/09 - Astronomy page was updated to show the sunrise and sunset directions (azimuth), tomorrow day length change, and the season's info. If you hover the mouse over the Tomorrow..., a text box will show you how much of the time change is from sunrise and how much is from sunset. 01/08 - Happy New Year to all visitors. December ended up about normal as far as temperature goes but rainfall was a station record for December of 7.79". The Reading Airport recorded 6.22" which is still well short of the December county record of 8.89" from 1983. 12/28 - Record High of 66 °F was set at the Reading Airport. The station high was also 66 °F as of 1:30 PM. 12/23 - Added NWS Area Forecast Discussion section to the NWS Forecast page (use links under forecast icons). 12/21 - Winter Solstice: Day length is 9 hr and 18 mins long and the sun reaches a very low 26° in the sky at noon. 12/20 - Winter Mode added to local radars to switch between showing snow/ice and regular precipitation. Reports have a new look and are still a work in progress. 12/19 - Winter Storm mostly fizzled here as temperatures hovered all day at the freezing point. The storm did bring 1.20" of rain, freezing rain, and sleet. The anemometer is currently frozen so there is no wind speed or direction being recorded. 12/16 - Winter Storm results in temperatures falling from 60 °F to 29 °F with rain changing to snow. 3.5" of snow has now fallen but recently changed over to sleet and freezing rain. 12/01 - Meteorological Fall Report (Sep - Nov): Based on the 5+ year station averages the 2008 Fall was 2.4 °F colder (54.0 °F) then normal. November was a big contributor being 3.5 °F below normal. Rainfall total was 12.3" mainly due to the 6.8" that fell in September but is still short of the average rainfall of 13.9". 11/20 - The first snowfall has been recorded at the station amounting to ~1.0". The cold blast will continue with temperatures 10 to 15 °F below normal. 11/01 - Meteorological Summer Report (Jun - Aug): Based on the 5+ year station averages the 2008 summer was 0.5 °F colder (73.1 °F) then normal and the dewpoint was 2.2 °F lower than normal meaning humidity levels were generally lower. 90 degree days totalled 11 with 13 days as the normal. 11/01 - October's average temperature was 3.2 °F below normal and rainfall was also below normal at 2.6" (station normal: 4.8"). The first sub-freezing night occurred on Oct 20th and a 43 mph gust was recorded on the 28th. 10/01 - September's average temperature was basically normal but rainfall was well above normal at 6.8" (station normal: 5.6"). There were three (3) 90 degree days during the month with the peak of 93 °F recorded on the 4th.
